Yakima Police Introduces Safecam

The Yakima Police Department (“YPD”) has introduced a new community action program designed to help solve crimes faster.  SafeCam is a program that allows business owners, tenants, and homeowners the opportunity to register their personal security cameras with the YPD.

Video surveillance is one of the best ways for catching criminals and convicting suspects who are caught in the act of committing a crime.

Using the geographic locations of registered cameras, the YPD will be able to request program participants to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time when a crime or incident occurred in their area. The YPD will not have remote access to the camera, but by answering just a few questions and notifying the department of the camera system, the YPD will be able to provide program participants with detectives that will hopefully help solve crimes faster. YPD will provide all the equipment necessary to record any video which may be needed in an investigation.

You can register for SafeCam online by going to yakimapolice.org or you can stop by the YPD at 200 South Third Street to register. Registration is free.
