Yakima Police Corrections Officer Assaulted

On Thursday, November 11th at approximately 4:30 pm, a Yakima police corrections officer was rendered unconscious when the corrections officer was assaulted by a Yakima Municipal Jail inmate during a routine cell check.

The cell that the corrections officer was conducting the check on was only occupied by one inmate, a 37-year-old male.

Immediately following the assault, multiple Yakima police officers responded to a request for assistance from Yakima Municipal Jail staff.  Both the Yakima Police Department and the Yakima Municipal Jail are located in the Richard A. Zais Law & Justice Center (200 South 3rd Street).

When first contacted by police officers, the inmate who assaulted the corrections officer refused to comply with orders to surrender.  Police officers were able to restrain the inmate and take him into custody.

Responding officers administered first aid to the corrections officer until emergency medical personnel arrived. The injured officer was later transported Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.  At last report, the corrections officer was in critical but stable condition.

The inmate was booked into the Yakima County Jail on assault charges. The Yakima Police Department Internal Affairs Unit is leading the investigation into this incident.
