Robertson Elementary Locked Down Due to Shooting a Few Blocks Away

Robertson Elementary School, located at 2807 West Lincoln Avenue, was placed on lockdown earlier today following a shooting that occurred about four blocks away.

At about 10:43 am today (October 5th), callers to 9-1-1 reported shots fired in the area of 24th Avenue and Englewood Avenue.  Police located a 23-year-old Yakima man who said he was riding his scooter in the area of 24th Avenue and Englewood Avenue when he was involved in a verbal exchange with two 16-year-old subjects who were walking by.  During the altercation, one of the juveniles pulled out a pistol and shot at the victim as he fled. The victim was not struck.

Robertson Elementary was placed on lockdown while police searched the neighborhood for the two juveniles.

Yakima police SWAT team members and a YPD K9 unit happened to be training in the area and responded to assist with the search. The two suspects were located and arrested as they tried to hide near the 2600 block of Wally Lane.

YPD K9 Zorro located a pistol hidden in a plastic bag and buried near where the suspects were arrested.

Police believe the two suspects and the 23-year-old involved in the incident have gang affiliations. “YPD’s Gang Unit has taken over the investigation,” said Yakima Police Captain Jay Seely.  “The incident was captured on security surveillance video,” Seely said.
