Officers from the Yakima Police Department spent much of Friday, March 13th investigating multiple fraudulent calls to Yakima residents claiming their children had been kidnapped. The Spanish-speaking callers told the recipients that they had kidnapped their child and they instructed the parent to collect money for a ransom. The calls were generated from international phone numbers and appeared to have been targeting members from the Hispanic community
Patrol and School Resource Officers were able to quickly confirm the children were in school and safe. The Yakima Police Department and SunComm Communications alerted the community, via social media, about the fraudulent phone calls. The calls stopped shortly thereafter.
We encourage parents to call 911 and notify authorities immediately after receiving such calls. “We recognize the fear this would cause any parent and we will work quickly to verify the veracity of the callers demands,” YPD Captain Jay Seely said.
