Independent Examination Underway of City Jail Inmate’s Attempted Suicide

The Yakima Police Department has asked the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit, which is comprised of multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the region, to examine an attempted suicide early Wednesday morning by an inmate at the Yakima Municipal Jail.  The Special Investigations Unit provides independent reviews of certain incidents involving Yakima-area law enforcement entities.

At about 2:45 am Wednesday during a routine, hourly inmate count, Yakima Municipal Jail corrections officers found a 46-year-old male inmate unconscious in his single-occupancy cell.  A homemade ligature was around the inmate’s neck.  Jail corrections officers and Yakima police officers immediately rendered medical aid to the inmate, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.  At last report, the inmate was in critical condition.

The inmate, whose name is being withheld pending notification of his family, was booked into the Yakima Municipal Jail on June 30th on a traffic warrant.

Additional information regarding the inmate’s attempted suicide will be provided as it becomes available.
